  • God's Word is experienced in context. An 'interpretative context' is present whenever persons attempt to communicate. Therefore, preaching is affected by the interpretative contexts of both preacher and hearer. A 'gap' may exist that can impede communication between persons whose interpretative contexts are sufficiently different. This project examined the contextual nature of preaching. Study of biblical texts, prior to their development in sermons, afforded pastors and congregations opportunity to become aware of contextual gaps. A sermon review process allowed for evaluation of the gap-bridging process. As interpretative contexts were examined, the potential for effective preaching was increased.
