- The premise of the project was that the integration of archaeological artifacts and information into audio-visual presentations and educational curricula will stimulate participation and improve the retention of material covered in classes. The author tested three groups of third and fourth graders, all of whom used the same curriculum. Two groups were taught in the traditional manner, with lessons outlined in the teacher's manual. The lessons taught to the third group were supplemented with archaeological artifacts. A pre- and post-test measured the differences between the groups and the author interviewed the teachers involved with the students. There was an encouraging difference between the experimental group and the two control groups. The children in the experimental group were more interested and motivated and had greater retention of specific materials than did the children in the control groups.
