- This thesis project suggests that extemporaneous preaching is more in tune with the needs of a contemporary audience. Preaching extemporaneously allows the minister to sustain eye contact with listeners and it also enables the preacher's speech patterns to be more conversational and hence more alive, and immediate, appealing to post modern audiences. Much has been written about extemporaneous preaching but there is a dearth of comprehensive and consistent information on how to do it. The thesis of this project is that various authors who have written methodologies on how to preach without notes can be synthesized into a comprehensive and usable application for preaching without notes. Data from listeners in a congregation suggests that preaching that is engaging and immediate is favored whether from notes or not. Preachers prefer written aids.
