  • Early Christian works of art were not painted for their artistic value, but rather for revitalizing faith. The artists adapted their art forms from secular society. Church architecture largely originated from traditional culture. One might conclude that Christian art has some Minjung elements. Korea has a rich cultural background with diverse, excellent artistic achievements. Yet many Christian artists still are holding a conservative attitude influenced by Western thought patterns. It is time to de-westernize Christian art in Korea. The author traced the role of Christian art in the context of Korean art history and developed a critique of it.
