  • The subjects of this research project are Roman Catholic clergy and members of religious communities who are residents in a psychological treatment center. Since usual prayer forms are not helpful during times of emotional breakdown, the author designed a course in prayer, using both verbal and non-verbal modalities. Using a phenomenological methodology, the study demonstrates that by expressing pain in a community of co-sufferers, the participants were able to discover new images of God, and new ways of praying while experiencing acute suffering. The theological foundations for this study were presented through historical, biblical, and psychological overviews of the themes of suffering and that of prayer within the Judaeo-Christian tradition.
