  • This thesis asserts that the church, the community of the baptized, is enlived and renewed through integrated Christian initiation, a unified complex including baptism, confirmation, and eucharist. A centuries-old tradition which denies the integrity of initiation challenges the church. This study reviews the history of Christian initiation, focusing on its disintegration, and reports an attempt to reintegrate Christian initiation in one congregation. The writer concludes that liturgical and educational interventions can transform behavior, attitudes, and values related to Christian initiation and church membership, and that the paschal vigil is a theological treasure worthy of recovery in the church.
