The writer's experience of being fired in his first pastorate, and the healing that took place in the subsequent pastorate, motivated him to encourage first-time pastors. This desire to encourage first-time pastors is the heart of this dissertation's work. The dissertation is an attempt to provide assistance to first-time pastors in order to possibly prevent what happened to the writer from happening to them. First-time pastors encounter ministry challenges. these ministerial challenges can be overcome through encouragement received in relationships with seasoned mentors such as directors of missions. This dissertation proposes that directors of missions possess a unique position in Southern Baptist life, distinguishing them from other sources of encouragement for the first-time pastor.
