In the context of a critical care hospital a record of pastoral visits was collected verbatim from eight patients, along with an assessment of the signs and symbols used to express their faith. This assessment yielded data from which pastoral interventions were identified, compared and classified according to the similar use of signs and symbols in faith expression. The project's conclusions concern the use of language in pastoral care, a theoretical orientation to the pastoral use of signs and symbols for faith expression and the hospital as a new institution of faith.
