- New members who joined seven United Methodist inner-city churches were surveyed to determine the characteristics of people who choose to join inner-city churches. These seven United Methodist churches are located in third class cities in Pennsylvania because these cities, being smaller in size, provide certain options of ministry which are not present in larger cities. Questionnaires were sent to 260 persons who joined these seven churches within the last five years. These questionnaires included, along with certain demographic material, vignettes of churces which elicited certain characteristics of those who choose to join inner-city churches. From these characteristics a theological statement concerning the inner-city church and five possible strategies are described. The five possible strategies suggested for inner-city churches in cities comparable to third class cities in Pennsylvania are: hold on and die; service to the neighborhood; regional church; neighborhood church; and ethnic church.
