  • Confession plays a significant and indispensable role in psychotherapy, in the recovery process of the alcoholic, and in pastoral counseling. It is the first stage of the psychotherapeutic process, and can help to locate the specific nature of a person's guilt, remorse, depression, and sadness. Confession, along with a call upon some power greater than one's self, plays a vital part in the recovery process of the alcoholic. It is a central thrust of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. The pastoral counselor is a therapist but also a pastor, a representative of God. The element of confession becomes sharper in pastoral counseling because of the pastor's dual role. In today's society confession is a neglected, but vitally important, resource in these fields and in the church.
