  • This thesis tests the proposition that an Episcopal church that is committed to shared ministry needs to have a clear statement of its theology of priesthood so that the entire community, both priests and lay persons, can affirm priestly ministry without depreciating others' ministries. The project surveyed congregants' attitudes and experiences of priesthood. Responses were compared with 'official' church teaching in the context of a parish-wide conversation. Parishioners identified both tensions and possibilities for exploring lay and ordained ministries. The paper discusses the priest's uniqueness, as well as how everyone can own and exercise leadership within the congregation.
