- Abstract
- This reflective study makes the claim that the most effective, contemporary praxis for transforming city neighborhoods through the United Methodist Church in Philadelphia is one that invests in a focused process of urban congregational transformation. Philadelphia is the context of study and the work of United Methodist Metro Ministries, Inc, the urban agency of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, is the example of an agency that developed and implemented such a process. Findings include: new self-understanding and praxis of urban congregations based on socio-theological reflection; greater satisfaction in the work of ministry in the city; new appreciation for social context and biblical study. This process necessitates critical reflection upon the urban context and disciplined biblical and theological study as indivisible for effective praxis in the city. Both reflections inform an intentional process of discernment through the organizational culture of the United Methodist Church towards a transformation that God is initiating in our cities.
