- The paper acknowledges the historical existence of conflict in the church, examines the role of conflict in social organizations, and points to the shift in conflict from doctrinal/structural issues to personal issues, i.e., the pastor's activities. The paper posits that changes in the understanding of ordination led to changes in expectation, hence conflict around the pastor. A survey instrument was developed, sent to 91 persons, and 35 responded. The ensuing analysis revealed both the personal cost to clergy and their families as well as the setting aside of much conventional wisdom as to what currently causes conflict in the church.
