- This is a descriptive analysis of the 'spiritual awakening' frequently experienced by alcoholics in AA. Using AA co-founder Bill Wilson as the paradigm, the author studied the phenomenon, termed 'metaconversion,' in twenty AA members, detailing characteristics occurring before and after the experience. Biblical and historical personages were studied for evidences of the phenomenon. An analysis is made of how the Twelve Steps of AA fosters metaconversion. There is a theological discussion of the phenomenon, a review of traditional and novel criticisms of AA, challenges AA presents to Christendom and new areas for investigation.
