- Abstract
- While serving a congregation that had previously experienced a long pastorate, the author led members and leaders through a process of choosing a new basic image of the church. Using a study course, participants considered open versus closed churches. In a leadership conference, board members were introduced to the implications of shared ministry. In a sermon series, congregants heard about five church models: covenant communion, sacrament, herald, servant, and community of disciples. In evaluations, the church's elders opted for an open church in which ministry is shared--a community of disciples.
