  • Burnout has only recently become an area of concern and research in the social services and people-helping professions. This project-thesis investigates causes and symptoms of burnout in the clergy and their similarity to the ancient sin of acedia, titled the 'Noonday Devil' by the Desert Fathers. The project provides a spiritual direction setting in which interdenominational clergy can: understand burnout as a bio-psycho-social-spiritual phenomenon and relate it to their lives; understand the sin of acedia and grasp the need for forgiveness; and explore some of the preventive and curative measures with a special emphasis on spiritual formation.
