  • The author compared by synod the attendance-to-baptized ratios of ELCA congregations with 300 and more attending to those with fewer. The fifty fastest growing congregations were examined. The difference between the attendence-to-baptized ratios for larger and smaller churches was .8 percent: 30.6 percent and 31.4 percent, respectively. There is no real difference in participation based on size. Approximately 32 percent of the baptized belong to the 10 percent of churches which are larger. 41 of the 50 fastest growing churches were larger churches with multiple staffs. There is opportunity for growth through existing larger congregations and new missions with appropriate planning and preparation of staff.
