This project provides a handbook (part II) and its research basis (part I). Part I examines Reformed theological concepts for military ministry. It includes interview findings that identify soldier problems and chaplain responses. Part II discusses the theological basis and historical context of the army chaplain's ministry, changes in military technology and the chaplain's current role on the battlefield, and interviews with Vietnam chaplains. The project and handbook concentrate on how Christian chaplains can most effectively bring a ministry of word and sacrament to soldiers; they do not address other theological issues associated with military service.
