- White, rural United Methodist parishioners are unaware of the extent to which White privilege, White prejudice and White bias centers and protects whiteness into their lives and in churches. This ethnographic study of five, White lay leaders in a rural United Methodist Church uses the relational tools of community organizing to invite them into authentic self-critical reflection, and this study observes the impact on the lay leaders and the congregation. The study found that these relational tools improved communication and strengthened leadership in the current context of the congregation, but they ultimately did not affect cultural change in any discernible way.
