- This project addresses the dilemma of ministers who learn the original languages in seminary training, but find difficulty in using the languages in preaching and teaching. The problem is addressed in this project through interviews of professors of homiletics and biblical studies as well as parish ministers, to discover the basic bridges used to move from the English text into the original languages and then forward to the preaching or teaching event. Groundwork is presented analyzing the basic hermeneutical question of what may be lost in translating the biblical languages across vastly different cultures over a time-span of two thousand years or more. This research focuses on the work of James Barr and Eugene Nida. The interview research of professors and ministers reveals numerous bridges for productively moving from the original text forward into preaching and teaching. Implications and cautions for preaching and teaching are presented, along with a summary of useful resources. The process was tested by parish ministers. The result of the research is a step-by-step process for use by the pastor.
