  • Individual churches have benignly neglected the disabled (whether physically, developmentally, or socially) and therefore have not intentionally reached out to them nor included them in meaningful discipleship. According to the National Organization on Disability/Harris Surveys of Americans with Disabilities, 47% of Americans with disabilities attend religious services at least once per month, compared to 65% of those without disabilities. Most congregations work to be hospitable and welcoming but physical barriers are easier to remove than stereotypical attitudes. This project reviewed biblical passages related to disability as well as literature on disabilities and a survey of over 150 churches to identify the best practices for ministering well to people impacted by disabilities.
