  • Psychoanalytically oriented pastoral therapists routinely must decide whether to gratify wishes of their clients. To assist clinicians in this process, the author seeks to integrate a contemporary understanding of Christian asceticism with contemporary perspectives on psychoanalytic abstinence. Noting what he perceives to be an energetic similarity between the two phenomena, the author attempts to create a conversation between the respective communities of knowledge. He then develops a theological basis for the proposed integration, and in a case study, seeks to demonstrate its serviceability. The study concludes that the 'soul' of ascetic experience provides a valuable resource for pastoral psychotherapists.
