  • This project proposes that service as deacons offers Lutheran Christians opportunities to serve God and others in a focused and intentional way, based on an analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of the lay diaconal program in Saint Mark's Lutheran Church (San Francisco). Three primary servanthood roles for deacons emerge in this study: worship, fellowship, and prayer. A deacon's role is not narrowly liturgical, but nonliturgical roles are developing more slowly. As these deacons respond to their servanthood tasks, their stories illuminate the diaconate's influence on their faith and on the life of the congregation. Diaconal servanthood is an asset to Lutheran churches and deacons are enabled to grow in faith, spirituality, and service as they enter into their work.
