  • In order to experience hermeneutic, the biblical text must be read from the writer's compositional as well as from the historical viewpoint. Composition-naive exegesis stands in dialectical tension with legitimate historical-critical exegesis. Hermeneutic--the text as subject--emerges as a result of employing these antithetical methodological exegeses. The compositional-naive method is holistic, concentrating on the discovery of the text's Gestalt. The method is demonstrated and the author's(s') 'manifestations' for Ephesians, Colossians and Philemon are indicated. It is concluded that Philemon, studied compositionally, serves as a useful model in the resolution of hermeneutical conflict in the local church.
