The systems theory of marriage and family counseling and the principles of brief therapy can provide the theoretical basis for effective problem solving and for bringing about needed change in a local congregation. The systems approach provided a significant shift in perception about the congregation, which enabled the pastor to bring positive action to a very difficult situation. In the two examples presented, change in the congregation resulting from the interventions was clearly indicated, although difficult to measure.
