  • Three stories, particular to a congregation's history, were identified as cosmogonic myth and metanarratives and tested for their ability to reshape the identity of that congregation as it was in flux. Mircea Eliade, Victor Turner and Paul Ricoeur provide the theoretical framework for congregational change, tested through direct observation, congergational focus groups, a survey, and interviews. Findings indicated that metanarratives are effective vehicles for conveying and shaping the church's values and identity, serving a corrective and evaluative function, renewing and healing. Dicussion includes the institutionalization of congregational myths, the role of the pastor, andn the relationship of myth and scripture.
