  • This project studies the relationship between preaching and congregational history. It proposes the thesis that it is possible to recount a congregation's history by listening to the preaching that occurred there. The project conducts a literary analysis of sermons preached in three Lutheran congregations in Northwest Ohio during a given year. This analysis is laid alongside the descriptions of significant parish events in bulletins, newsletters and other written documents. The pattern of connecting points leads to the conclusion that there is a two-fold relationship: preaching both creates and mirrors parish events.
