Abstract
  • Receiving a vital organ from another human body is a powerful experience on emotional and spiritual levels, as well as on the physical level. As this procedure becomes more and more common, an increasing number of pastors will be ministering to one or more parishioners who are facing the transplantation experience. In this project, a theology of the value of human life and health is presented, along with a theological approach to pastoral care in situations where there is no cure, only continuing treatment of a chronic situation, such as the drawn-out process of transplantation and its resulting permanent life changes. The experience of receiving a new vital organ is explained from the beginning of pre-transplant phase, through the transplant, and post-transplant phases. Physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the process are explored and suggestions are given as to how best to minister in each stage of the process. The result is a booklet for ministers which they may use to aid them in better understanding and ministering to their congregants who are living with the help of an organ from another person's body.
