  • Southern Baptist ministers who have ministered on the denominational periphery, amidst the theological pluralism of the military chaplaincy, face difficult adjustments when they reenter the denominational ministry upon retirement from military service. This project uses the focused interview to identify transitional difficulties and the availability of assistance in these categories: theological, personal, economic, familial and relocation. It draws conclusions, with correlative implications, from these interviews. Southern Baptist ministers, generally, are not adversely affected by ministry in the military. They usually return successfully to ministry within their denomination. Personal contacts with civilian denominational counterparts is a definite enhancement to this transition.
