  • Stories have power which can only be released when shared. To validate this theory, the author proposed to introduce into the St. John Baptist youth mentoring program a component of remembering, reclaiming, and sharing stories in the African American tradition, to encourage faith and promote academic performance. The author researched literature to substantiate the significance of storytelling as a transforming experience. Research included stories of ancestors, the Black church tradition and personal life stories. A ministry tool was developed to delineate a guided process to assist participants in remembering and reclaiming stories as a means of empowering themselves and others.
