  • In this project the author analyzes the power and authority of the rabbi from four perspectives: the sociological, psychological, theological, and historical. After presenting strict definitions of the terms 'power' and 'authority', he devotes most of the analysis of rabbinic power of the Talmudic, medieval, and modern periods from three psychological perspectives: analytical (Jungian), existential, and family systems. The author concludes that, despite the loss of power and authority in the wider community, the rabbi's power can be found in those areas where he chooses to become more self-differentiated and more of a specialist.
