  • This project examines historically the Halifax Baptist Hospital Chaplaincy (HBHC), determines the expectations and satisfaction of some United Baptist patients, and offers suggestions for future ministry in HBHC. Employing a literature review, archival research, oral histories, and a survey questionnaire, the project uncovered a history punctuated with tensions. United Baptist patients expect evangelical pastoral support; they are satisfied with their experience of HBHC. Neither individuals nor congregations will accept a fully ecumenical chaplaincy. The project recommends that HBHC be incorporated under a board that can secure funding under its own foundation. The project also proposes two possible models of cooperative ministry that respond to conclusions derived from the survey.
