The research for this project demonstrated that there is a significant correlation between good preaching and a healthy, long pastorate. The participants in the research were elders in congregations of the Reformed Church in America where the pastor had served at least ten years. A questionnaire allowed those elders to rank eight areas of ministry and to give an indication of the health of the pastoral relationship. The elders ranked the preaching of the word second, just behind the spiritual life and personal faith of the pastor as being most important in the long pastorate.
