  • Traditionally, chaplains have helped patients use illness as opportunity for spiritual growth. Current trends, such as shorter hospital stays and pastoral staff reductions, impede such ministry. Seven brochures entitled 'The Search,' 'Faith,' 'Hope,' 'Love,' 'Emotions,' 'Waiting' and 'Power' were developed to facilitate patients' spiritual growth during hospitalization. The brochures, grounded in narrative and process theology, encourage patients to make their illness experiences part of their faith story. Their value was tested and affirmed through written surveys completed by former patients and others. Results point to their use as enhancers of, rather than substitutes for, pastoral caregivers in the hospital setting.
