  • This dissertation demonstrates the background, process, and the effects of the Pyongyang revival of 1907-1910 in Korea and the prayer revival of 1857-1859 in New York. Subsequently, it demonstrates that the Pyongyang revival possessed limitations due to its historical context, and that is how the prayer revival of 1857-1859 can be used to revitalize the prayer practices of the Korean-American church. The two revivals shared many things in common: both of them occurred in the midst of crisis and helped people to overcome the difficulties, prayer played a major role, and they were influenced by other global revivals and also influenced them. However, significant differences occurred between them. The prayer revival was solemn, led by lay leadership, and had strong emphasis on the conversion of the lost. The Pyongyang revival was loud, led by pastor missionaries, and confession of sins was the major concern.
