Abstracto

The author suggests that contemplation/action has not only been in creative tension throughout religious history but has been juxtaposed, categorized, and polarized. This has not enhanced communal endeavors. The author suggests that each category alone is insufficient. Both approaches are needed to further the ideal of a naturally balanced life, personally and communally. Grounding contemplation/action in a process that is dynamically and fundamentally part of the human condition, the author offers insights into activist, Dorothy Day, and monastic, Thomas Merton. The resulting study evokes a retreat experience that invites participants to discover a newly integrated praxis for overcoming an experienced division between contemplation and action.
