- This dissertation addressed the controversial question of how divorce (and remarriage) impacts one's qualifications for deaconate ministry in the local church and how consistently churches apply the standard they claim. Looking at text, tradition, and actual practice, the latter of which was gained through a survey of American Baptist pastors -- the writer evaluated approaches to this question, determining that inconsistency too often emerges in the context of application. While an analysis of the text led him to the conclusion that Paul intended to describe present character with his 'husband of one wife' phrase in 1 Timothy 3, the writer has a greater desire to see consistency in application than consensus in position.
