Abstract
  • This thesis addresses the rapid growth of the contemporary worship music scene and the expanding use of such music styles in Christian worship services. The goal is to consider the biblical definition and role of worship, assessing the merits of the contemporary styles as conduits of genuine God-honoring worship. A brief overview of worship styles spawned by divergent traditions in the Christian Church is included, providing a relevant historical framework. Contemporary worship music is an unavoidable topic of debate. It plays an increasingly prominent role in even those denominational traditions that have heretofore exclusively embraced traditional or historic worship. Many persons are critical of the contemporary phenomena. This thesis will attempt to assess the merits of the principal, recurring criticisms. While it is difficult to predict future trends, and impossible to do so with absolute accuracy, there are observable indicators of the directions worshippers are taking and may take. The core quest of this thesis is to determine if these contemporary trends and future shifts in worship styles and emphases might augur a God-sent revival.
