  • That grief can be felt as the result of many kinds of “losses” or “separations” seems to be widely accepted fact. Divorce, extended separation, moving, retirement, and a host of other factors may precipitate grief reactions. The focus of this paper, however, is on grief experienced as the result of death of a loved one, or significant other person. Such grief will be defined and clarified in psychological terms, emphasizing the importance of resolving the grief by expressing the full range of emotions associated with it. It will be shown through several case studies that unresolved grief, the inhibition of natural feelings occasioned by the death of a loved one, may be a factor in marital crises. Finally, an attempt will be made to indicate how pastors and pastoral counselors may use the data herein both to prevent and treat some grief disorders.
