Abstrait

The thesis that the author studied is: Because church leaders of a congregation differ maturationally in the way that they organize information about their environment, they therefore also differ from each other in the way they envision and implement ('make') a test decision within the church and how they evaluate the effectiveness of that decision after the fact. The author studied this thesis by locating church leaders according to Robert Kegan's personality balances and then observing their actual behavior through the process of making a key decision in the life of the local church. He found that Kegan's theory of constructive-developmental personality was helpful in understanding the differences that were demonstrated in the various ways the church leaders envisioned, implemented, and evaluated the decision that confronted them. In addition, he offers several observations about how church leaders of each stage can be expected to approach an exercise of decision-making.
