  • In this project, the author debates the theory of substitutionary atonement. He creates and teaches a curriculum on this topic in the faith community he ministers to. The goal of the curriculum is to invite to a different interpretation of the death of Jesus that appeals to critically thinking people of the 21st century. The curriculum challenges the participants of the study group by interpreting Jesus' death as martyrdom-as a consequence of his life and message. The curriculum evaluation shows that participants began or continued a process of understanding Jesus' death differently, without using the theory of substitutionary atonement.
