- The goal of this paper is to answer the pastoral care question: How can pastoral caregivers provide hope in a meaningful and holistic way for the individual who is dying? This paper presents the theological understanding of hope in both the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament. The issue of theodicy and the meaning of suffering is also discussed. The different theological understandings of hope for this paper come from Jürgen Moltmann, Wolfhart Pannenberg and John Macquarrie. A theology of dying and pastoral care techniques are described for the different stages of grief. These techniques are helpful to pastoral caregivers in providing hope for those who are dying. The community of faith and their importance in providing hope for the dying is not addressed. Case studies are presented to describe how the author provided hope to the dying through pastoral care techniques. Hope is not an easy concept to grasp, but this paper puts some handles on how hope can be provided by pastoral caregivers in caring for the dying.
