- This research project involved a survey of people who had left the church (the dechurched) to discover the reasons why they left and how to reclaim them to an active place in the church. Responses of 104 African-American participants from a large Midwestern city indicated that interpersonal issues were a major factor. Personal issues also played an important role in people leaving the church. A large segment (45.2%) of the participants said that nothing could have been done to keep them. However, nearly 30% said that listening, caring, and praying with them would have been helpful.
