Abstract
  • This project treats the trauma and grief police officers experience when a fellow officer is killed in the line of duty or commits suicide. The project concentrates on a police chaplain's pastoral care of officers who experience an intense grief reaction because of their own fear of death, the close bond between officers, and the public nature of the whole process. Grief in general, sudden violent death grief, Critical Incident Trauma, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are discussed. The project concludes with a pastoral care plan clergy can use in helping officers or other grieving persons.
