  • This project seeks to define 'the church' for the African American community. Is it a building of marble, brick, or stone? Is it a refuge where lost souls can find a home? Is it a place for weddings, funerals, preachers, and politics? Is it hard and unsympathetic, old fashioned, and out of style? This project concludes that the black church is at least three things: it is a leader of the African American community; it is a family institution; it is a source of social action--all for the good of its members.
