- This paper provides an historical overview of adoption to include some of its recent shifts and psycho-theological perspectives on adoption as a basis for improving pastoral care with adoptive individuals and families. A survey questionnaire was used to assess the churches' and ministers' involvement in the pastoral care of adoptive individuals and families. Survey results indicated that the ministers' and churches' involvement is limited and adoptive families have a need for pastoral support. Consequently, as a model of pastoral care, the author recommends that ministers and churches incorporate an 'adoption ceremony' to embrace, celebrate and witness the family's adoptive identity. Secondly, that the church establish an adoption support group or network with other churches and community adoption support services and groups for pastoral care.
