Abstract
  • The purpose of this study was to discover whether a relationship exists between a son's perceived paternal blessing and his satisfaction with life. Forty-five Caucasian males between the ages of thirty-five and forty-five complete a questionnaire based on the scriptural tradition and the psychoanalytic developmental theory of Peter Blos. Paternal blessing is defined as the shared vital and life sustaining affirmation or confirmation of a son's worth by a significant adult male, a father or surrogate father. Life satisfaction is defined as work satisfaction, non-father relational satisfaction, a general sense of life's meaning and completion of adolescence. A statistically significant correlation is found between a son's paternal blessing and his adult life satisfaction.
