- The author conducted a congregational self-study within a small-town United Methodist church for the purpose of characterizing the local congregation's sense of self-identity. An eight-member study team, along with the author, listened to recorded interviews of church members telling of their relationship with the church. Listening for particular narrative and symbolic elements within these discourses, the study team identified three distinct congregations within the one church that is held together by a strong corporate affinity toward 'open' communion. A corporate myth was discovered that characteristically paralleled the plot of the medieval narrative, the Quest for the Holy Grail.
