  • 'Traditional' family structures are reflected in an increasingly small minority of families in Western culture. This project proposes that Western culture continues to promote this model of family out of an unexamined biblical bias. Family based on bloodline relationship is the primary, preferred, and dominant biblical model. The project interviewed nontraditional families about how they have or have not been received by their faith communities and how they understand family. Using feminist and womanist understandings of relationship and morality, the project offers nine foundational principles for an inclusive ethic of the family that underlie recommendations for ministry that includes nontraditional families.
