  • 'Extending God's Healing Mercy' is an analysis of a Doctor of Ministry project of recruiting, training, and sending volunteers to serve through the pastoral care department of a faith-based hospital system located in north-central Pennsylvania. This effort is framed by the Susquehanna Health Pastoral Care Department's transition from a center of clinical pastoral education to a hospital department comprised of professional chaplains ministering to the spiritual needs of patients, their families, and hospital staff. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis this project bears witness that volunteers can help a pastoral care department move beyond maintenance toward excellence in the practice of pastoral care.
